Sigh....

It's the first day of my new job. I have a long commute, so I had the alarm set for 5. At 4:45, my mothers ALF called to say that she'd fallen out of bed. They don't think she's injured but had her transported to the nearby hospital to be checked out.

I am glad she's in good hands. I don't know what to do about the bed - it's as low as I could find. It was fine for the first couple of nights, too - I think the issue is her overall weakness combined with not being as careful as she should be.

I told the woman on the phone that I couldn't be there and she said don't worry about it, she'll be fine. Hell of a way to start the day.

No no sweetie pie - that's why she's in the AL place. So you can go off to work so you can pay for your own AL place one day.

Enjoy your fist day at work - and know you've done the good thing.

My grandmother used to "fall" whenever she knew my mother had something fun to do. like go out of town for the weekend. Once Mom stopped telling her if she had anything planned, the falls stopped.

Hope the first day on the new job was great.

I think this was a legit fall, she genuinely bruised herself. Of course, there isn't a damn thing I can do about it - it's not the bed and it's not the sheets (she's blaming both) it's her. I never tell my mother if I have something fun planned, are you kidding me? I don't think she's intentionally hurt herself to get attention but she sure as hell will call with a manufactured crisis - so she never knows when I have "something fun" planned. :-)

As Bess said, that's why she's in the AL. They are required to call you if she gets a hangnail - it's how they cover their A%%. But she has someone to help her get back in bed and get her food and check in on her- something you could not do if she were living alone and far away. And you will be able to stay employed and start saving up for your own AL one day. Because we are all going to need it.

I have a stomach ache from just thinking about what you're going through. I hope your first day went all right and that you had no more phone calls. (Fingers crossed.)

I have a friend whose mother is in an ALF four states away. Not any of your east coast baby states - Montana and NoDak are two of them. Should I have her email you and give you some words of encouragement? (Her problems are different - her mother is 100, has no short term memory, and is stubborn as an ox. But she has to rely on the nurses there.)
